“Beef” made Golden Globes history as the first show both created by and starring Asian Americans to win in its category.
The comedy-drama, featuring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, centers on a road rage incident that spirals into a rivalry while their lives change and fall apart.
The show drew acclaim for portraying the Korean American evangelical experience and other facets of Asian American life. “Our show is actually based on a real road rage incident that actually happened to me, so I’d be remiss not to thank that driver,” creator Lee Sung Jin joked while accepting the award. “Sir, I hope you honk and yell and inspire others for years to come.”
Accepting the award for Best Actress in an Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, Wong gave a shout out to her estranged husband and the father of her two children. Steven Yeun thanked his daughter while comparing his emotions of the night, from isolation to inclusion, to the plot of Disney’s “Frozen”, which garnered laughter from the audience.
The other nominees included “All the Light We Cannot See,” “Daisy Jones and the Six,” “Fargo” and “Lessons in Chemistry.”
“Beef” is anticipated to gain more awards after the success at the 81st Golden Globes and previous category wins at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.
