The Los Angeles Police Department is marking a milestone as it appoints its first Latina deputy chief. Ruby Flores, a Mexican American hailing from East Los Angeles and Norwalk, radiates pride as she discusses her new role with NBC Los Angeles. While thrilled about her advancement to a significant leadership position, she acknowledges the weight of responsibility that comes with it, both within the department and in the eyes of the public, NBC’s Karla Rendon reports.
“I want to ensure that I can positively impact young girls and women by occupying this leadership role,” Flores expressed. “If I can do that, then I am committed to continuing those efforts.”
Joining the department in 1994, Flores discovered her interest in law enforcement while studying criminal justice at Long Beach State University. A personal incident involving another police agency solidified her resolve to become an officer.
“At the age of 21, I was involved in a car accident and subsequently targeted by a stranger in an attempted assault,” Flores recounted. “The experience of navigating through the legal process made me realize the disparities women face. I felt like a suspect rather than a victim.”
This encounter fueled her desire to effect change from within the system. “I wanted to be part of the solution, rather than contributing to the problem,” Flores asserted.
Reflecting on her journey within the LAPD, Flores acknowledged encountering skepticism from those who questioned her decision to join the force. Aware of the challenges inherent in a predominantly male environment, she persevered, earning the respect of her colleagues through her exceptional performance.
“It’s been both a privilege and a struggle,” Flores remarked. “Advancing through the ranks was no easy feat, but the honor is all the greater because of it.”
As she assumes her role as deputy chief, Flores is committed to furthering diversity and inclusion within the department while inspiring young girls and women to pursue their ambitions, undeterred by naysayers.
“Girls are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to,” Flores affirmed. “With confidence, determination, and hard work, they’ll realize their true potential.”
